I mean, nowadays the whole population is living with sugar up to their necks. This is highlighted by the World Health Organization in its <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.who.int\/iris\/bitstream\/handle\/10665\/149782\/9789241549028_eng.pdf?sequence=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8216;Guide to Sugar Intake for Children and Adults&#8217;<\/a> when you can&#8217;t get enough warning signs about this ingredient. Eloquent as few is <a href=\"https:\/\/cdnb.20m.es\/el-nutricionista-de-la-general\/files\/2014\/02\/Evoluci\u00f3n-del-consumo-de-az\u00facar.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this curve<\/a> that represents the consumption of sugar in the last three centuries: we have gone from having an average consumption per inhabitant and year of approximately 3-6 kg in the eighteenth century to about 70 kg today.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-1 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last\" style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:10px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\" style=\"background-position:left top;background-repeat:no-repeat;-webkit-background-size:cover;-moz-background-size:cover;-o-background-size:cover;background-size:cover;padding: 0px 0px 0px 0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-2\"><blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload alignleft wp-image-5547 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/latam.patiadiabetes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/bigstock-medicine-diabetes-glycemia-103182131-150x150.jpg\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/latam.patiadiabetes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/bigstock-medicine-diabetes-glycemia-103182131-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"c\u00f3mo asimila nuestro cuerpo la glucosa\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%27150%27%20height%3D%27150%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%20150%20150%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%27150%27%20height%3D%27150%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/latam.patiadiabetes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/bigstock-medicine-diabetes-glycemia-103182131-66x66.jpg 66w, https:\/\/latam.patiadiabetes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/bigstock-medicine-diabetes-glycemia-103182131-150x150.jpg 150w\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-orig-sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The real problem with people with diabetes is that, based on several factors &#8211; genetic and lifestyle &#8211; they end up with insulin resistance, so that insulin does not perform its function properly, and therefore blood glucose levels rise above what would be healthy. But let&#8217;s not fool ourselves, the problem with access to the enormous amount of sugar that surrounds us (in any of its forms) <a href=\"https:\/\/latam.patiadiabetes.com\/en\/food-self-management-to-prevent-type-2-diabetes-risk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">is everyone&#8217;s problem<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It is time to identify the amount of sugar present in food and to know the tools to properly interpret the labeling.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-2 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last\" style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:10px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\" style=\"background-position:left top;background-repeat:no-repeat;-webkit-background-size:cover;-moz-background-size:cover;-o-background-size:cover;background-size:cover;padding: 0px 0px 0px 0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-3\"><h2><strong>STEP ONE: fresh farmer-market food is fine<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<p>Keep in mind that we only must worry about the sugar present in ultra-processed foods or that sugar that the <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload  wp-image-9949 alignright\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%27363%27%20height%3D%27249%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%20363%20249%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%27363%27%20height%3D%27249%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/latam.patiadiabetes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/mercado.jpg\" alt=\"mercado\" width=\"363\" height=\"249\" \/>WHO considers to be &#8216;free&#8217; sugars. I&#8217;ll explain. When you go to the farmer-market and buy a quarter and a half of spinach, a 2 kg turbot, half of cherries, two filleted chicken breasts, and other similar products, you can forget about sugar. Either because the foods mentioned do not contain it or because it is not worth counting it, at least in a negative way. These sugars, if present, are considered as &#8216;intrinsic&#8217;.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-3 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last\" style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:10px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\" style=\"background-position:left top;background-repeat:no-repeat;-webkit-background-size:cover;-moz-background-size:cover;-o-background-size:cover;background-size:cover;padding: 0px 0px 0px 0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-4\"><p>Free sugars are all those sugars added by the user or incorporated by the manufacturer in the preparation of any processed product. By way of exception, the WHO also considers &#8216;free&#8217; sugars those that are present in a food thanks to its special availability, even if there is no &#8220;addition&#8221;, for example those of honey and those present in juices.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, the sugars present in milk, whole and fresh fruits and vegetables are considered &#8216;intrinsic&#8217;. Thus, in the words of the WHO itself, they should not be negatively considered when choosing these foods.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-4 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last\" style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:10px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\" style=\"background-position:left top;background-repeat:no-repeat;-webkit-background-size:cover;-moz-background-size:cover;-o-background-size:cover;background-size:cover;padding: 0px 0px 0px 0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-5\"><h2><strong>STEP TWO: understanding sugar claims in labeling<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Suppose you are no longer in the farmers market and you find yourself in front of a product that has its packaging and labelling and that there is something in it that refers to its sugar content. It could be such as:<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-5 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last\" style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:10px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\" style=\"background-position:left top;background-repeat:no-repeat;-webkit-background-size:cover;-moz-background-size:cover;-o-background-size:cover;background-size:cover;padding: 0px 0px 0px 0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-6\"><ul>\n<li><strong>Low sugar content<\/strong>: European Regulation 1924\/2006 states that a food could be labeled as low in sugar if the product does not contain more than 5g of sugar per 100g for solid foods or 2.5g of sugar per 100 ml for liquids.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sugar-free<\/strong>: the same text states that a food does not contain sugar if the product does not contain more than 0,5 g of sugar per 100 g or 100 ml.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload alignright wp-image-9954\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%27300%27%20height%3D%27225%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%20300%20225%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%27300%27%20height%3D%27225%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/latam.patiadiabetes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/sugarfree_tout1-1.gif\" alt=\"Sugar free Sin azucar\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/li>\n<li><strong>No added sugars<\/strong>: A claim that no sugars have been added to a food may only be made where no monosaccharide or disaccharide, or food used for its sweetening properties, has been added to the product. If sugars are naturally present in foods, the following indication shall also appear on the labelling: &#8220;<em>contains naturally present sugars<\/em>&#8220;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-6 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last\" style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:10px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\" style=\"background-position:left top;background-repeat:no-repeat;-webkit-background-size:cover;-moz-background-size:cover;-o-background-size:cover;background-size:cover;padding: 0px 0px 0px 0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-7\"><p>However, we must call for precaution. I will explain. Such statements about sugar (or any other ingredient) can be compared to when a terrorist says he doesn&#8217;t carry a gun; and it may be true, but he can hide a knife or a machine gun or another weapon. In other words, having little or no sugar does not imply, at all, that the nutritional profile of that product is healthy. Either because of its lipid profile, its amount of salt, its high energy intake &#8230; or whatever. Remember that in the end this type of statements is only possible in the products of the supermarket, not those at the farmers market.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-7 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last\" style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:10px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\" style=\"background-position:left top;background-repeat:no-repeat;-webkit-background-size:cover;-moz-background-size:cover;-o-background-size:cover;background-size:cover;padding: 0px 0px 0px 0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-8\"><h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>STEP THREE: Discover hidden sugar and all its pseudonyms<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h2><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload alignright wp-image-9951 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/latam.patiadiabetes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/azucares-696x511-300x220.jpg\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/latam.patiadiabetes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/azucares-696x511-300x220.jpg\" alt=\"sustitutos azucar \" width=\"300\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%27300%27%20height%3D%27220%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%20300%20220%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%27300%27%20height%3D%27220%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/latam.patiadiabetes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/azucares-696x511-220x161.jpg 220w, https:\/\/latam.patiadiabetes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/azucares-696x511-300x220.jpg 300w, https:\/\/latam.patiadiabetes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/azucares-696x511.jpg 696w\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-orig-sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/h2>\n<p>Another important tool to discover the sugar that we incorporate is to read the list of ingredients and discover the sugar that includes a product without the word \u201csugar\u201d in it. Thus, it is not uncommon that in order to avoid mentioning &#8220;sugar&#8221; the manufacturer incorporates other ingredients without mentioning it. The most common are cane juice, honey (of any origin), high fructose corn syrup, dextrose, fructose, sucrose, fruit concentrate, glucose, invert sugar, maltose, or syrup (whatever). All of them can also be given different adjectives that usually turns to a healthy pleasing image to consumers, for example: organic or natural maple syrup &#8230; when and facing what really matters is pure sugar. Remember that, in the end, the sugar in your sugar bowl could be called organic beet sucrose (if that beet was certified as organic).<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-9\"><h2><strong>FINAL STEP: run away from &#8220;diabetic&#8221; labeled foods<\/strong>.<\/h2>\n<p>The pretext to label a product as special &#8220;for diabetics&#8221; often based on the reduction of energy intake, fat, also the replacement of sugars non- caloric or other <a href=\"https:\/\/latam.patiadiabetes.com\/en\/sweeteners-obesity-and-type-2-diabetes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sweeteners<\/a>, or the exchange of certain sugars, typically fructose. However, we must be aware that this type of food is not justified unless they are considered within the framework of a balanced, varied and healthy diet. In fact, one of the most prestigious guidelines in the management of type 2 diabetes, that of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nice.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">British National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence<\/a> (NICE) states without doubt that &#8220;the use of foods marketed specifically for diabetics is discouraged&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nice.org.uk\/guidance\/ng28\/chapter\/1-Recommendations#dietary-advice-and-bariatric-surgery\">(point 1.3.8).<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><style type=\"text\/css\">.fusion-fullwidth.fusion-builder-row-1 { overflow:visible; }<\/style><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":18,"featured_media":9968,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[21],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!--
