The dangerous interaction between COVID-19 and type 2 diabetes
“Observational data indicate that patients with diabetes are at greater risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection, severe illness and death from COVID-19 than patients without diabetes” Advances in Motion Mayo, 2020.
Type 2 diabetes is associated with an increased risk of serious complications or death if you get CORONAVIRUS. Observational data indicate that patients with diabetes are at greater risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection, serious illness and death from COVID-19 than patients without diabetes. Preventing type 2 diabetes and controlling hyperglycemia helps to avoid the fatal consequences of coronavirus. The death rate in patients with COVID-19 who have hyperglycemia is 7 times higher. It is possible to act against the dramatic consequences of the interaction between these two pandemics: COVID-19 and type 2 diabetes.
A bidirectional relationship
Relevant recently published studies in China, Italy and the United States conclude that the prevalence of diabetes in patients with COVID-19 was higher than in the general population.
On the one hand, diabetes is associated with an increased risk of very severe COVID-19, on the other hand, COVID-19 can trigger diabetes and the serious metabolic complications of pre-existing diabetes, and can lead to type 2 diabetes in people with a genetic predisposition to diabetes.
The three main approaches that can be used to try to break the link between diabetes and the severity of COVID-19 are: maintaining normoglycaemia and avoiding glycaemic peaks in patients with type 2 diabetes, preventing diabetes in pre-diabetic patients, and assessing the risk of diabetes and the prevention of diabetes in asymptomatic individuals at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
In the months since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, publications have been pouring in and there is no doubt that people with diabetes are among the groups at risk. This is why all prevention efforts are necessary.
DIABETESpredict test measures the genetic risk of developing type 2 diabetes and provides personalized, genotype-based recommendations to lower the risk and prevent future complications.
